3 Things You’re Doing That Don’t Protect You From Germs

Dousing your hands in sanitizer, holding your breath when people cough or sneeze–would it surprise you to know that these measures don’t always protect you from germs or viruses?

Now that cold and flu season is upon us, you’re probably following many rituals that you believe keep you safe from those nasty germs.  Dousing your hands in sanitizer, holding your breath when people cough or sneeze–would it surprise you to know that these measures don’t always protect you from germs or viruses?  There are plenty of actions people take every day that do basically nothing for your health.  Read on to find out what you’re doing wrong.

1. Flushing the toilet with your foot.

This helps nothing–while many believe that it keeps your hands safe from germs, remember that public restroom floors are the most germ-prone areas.  You’re kicking everywhere when you flush a toilet with your foot.  You can immediately wash your hands after you flush, but the germs on your foot are going to track into your home later on.

2. Hovering over the seat.

Toilet seats are not crawling with germs, though you might be under that impression.  In fact, there is little chance of you contracting anything from a public toilet seat–this is not the area of the restroom you need to worry about.  However, hovering increases the risk of contaminating the seat.  And you’re going to release a plume of fecal matter when you flush, anyway.  There’s no point in causing more hassle for others when your precautions do nothing to protect you.

3. Touching surfaces with your elbow or the back of your hand.

It may seem as though gripping a public restroom door handle can transfer germs much easier than it would were you to use the back of your hand to turn the knob.  However, those germs are still coming into contact with your body–there’s no difference between which part of you turns the knob.  The best solution in this case is to always wash your hands.  If everyone does this properly, we can severely cut the risk of catching the flu in a public restroom.
