How This Bathroom Device is Spraying Fecal Matter on to Your Clean Hands

While recent studies have shown traces of mold thriving in the warmth of the dryers, a new study highlights an even more disturbing substance in the rushing air: fecal particles that are sprayed on to your hands with every use.

Are there fecal particles on YOUR hands? If you have used a hand dryer lately, there may be.

Successfully disguised as part of our bathroom hygiene routine, hand dryers have recently been revealed as the true culprit of bacteria on our hands. While recent studies have shown traces of mold thriving in the warmth of the dryers, a new study highlights an even more disturbing substance in the rushing air: fecal particles that are sprayed on to your hands with every use. Although this thought may be disturbing enough to make you invest in paper towels, the real scare factor is in the dangerous diseases that come along with it.

Bacteria in the Air

A recent report published by Applied and Environmental Microbiology found that an alarming 60 different bacterial colonies are blown out of the machines in only 30 seconds of drying your hands. As these machines suck in the contaminated air released into the room from flushing toilets throughout the day, they blow out air contaminated with a variety of bacteria, as well as particles of fecal matter.

Dangerous Bugs

Perhaps even more alarming than the thought of fecal particles on your clean hands is the thought that staphylococcus, or staph infections, have also been found in these machines. In this study, 36 bathrooms at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine were tested for samples of bacteria shown in a single drying session. Staph was just one of the many dangerous types of bacteria shown in these tests, as various types of bacteria were found to be harbored in each hand dryer.

The Solution? Toilet Lids and Professional Sanitation

In order to nearly eliminate bursts of bacteria into the air from toilets, researchers recommend the use of toilet lids before flushing to avoid bacteria from the 10-15 foot spray caused by flushing. In addition to eliminating the source of this bacteria, it is equally important to fully sanitize hard surfaces where this bacteria can thrive, such as countertops, door handles, and faucet handles. While cleaning with regular products may make these surfaces appear to be cleaner, many different types of bacteria and viruses can only be eliminated with the use of professional grade sanitation products. With this in mind, it is best to entrust the sanitation of your restroom to a team of professionals with the right tools and products for your restroom.
