Summer is a great time to hit the road and enjoy the warmer weather away from home. While adventure may be calling you to public places as you explore new foods, travel destinations, or activities, it is important to also be aware of the potential germs that you can meet when you are away from home. Public restrooms, pool locker rooms, restaurants, and activity centers are among some of the worst offenders for germs that can quickly ruin your good time this summer. These destinations, while fun, also house potential illnesses with germs that can cause high fever, gastrointestinal complications, and even skin sores caused by parasites lingering on contaminated surfaces. As you travel throughout your summer vacation, be sure to avoid these diseases and their troublesome symptoms on your summer getaway.
Necrotizing Faciitis (Flesh-eating Disease)
Similar to its cousin, the staph infection, the flesh-eating disease enters the body through open cuts, sores, and burns that are infected. This infection spreads by eating away at skin tissue into open sores and swollen tissue. This disease is often the result of infected open cuts or scrapes from summer adventure sports such as hiking, zip lining, or swimming, and can be prevented with thorough washing and antiseptic use.
One of the most dangerous gastrointestinal illnesses, the painful symptoms of Hepatitis A are especially serious due the nature of its incubation in your system. As a serious liver infection, the gastrointestinal complications of this disease are particularly serious, not only because of the pain and discomfort that they cause, but also because of the long-term effects that they can have on your body over time. Initial symptoms of hepatitis A include stomach issues, flu-like symptoms, and digestion discomfort that requires rest and treatment for a duration of one to two months.
A parasitic intestinal illness, giardiasis is spread through drinking water contaminated with fecal matter as well as hands that are contaminated from fecal contact. It is typically found in areas with contaminated water or poor sanitation. It’s painful symptoms include prolonged diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Treatment for giardiasis can sometimes require an antibiotic, otherwise the illness can flush through your body on its own.
