With flu season in full-swing, it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re protecting yourself from disease and germs. Most of us don’t do this as much as we should, which results in a high rate of flu spreading. And there’s a common misconception that the toilet is the place with the most germs in a public restroom–this isn’t actually the case. In fact, you’d be surprised where you’d find the most germs in public restrooms. Practicing excellent hygiene habits in public restrooms is a major step when it comes to defeating diseases and bacteria. Here’s what you should be paying extra attention to.
The floor is probably the least hygienic place in restrooms. ABC News found that most public restroom floors have about 2 million bacteria per square inch. Not only do fecal matter and urine sometimes miss their mark, but every time a toilet is flushed, fecal matter is also sprayed into the air, which can stay there for up to 20 minutes before contaminating the floor. Most public restroom floors are made up of tiles; bacteria can settle in the grouting, and because these floors are often wet, it is given the opportunity to grow and spread. Floors are the worst places to come into contact with, so don’t think about placing your purse there!
That’s right–one of the biggest culprits of germ-spreading can be your own hands. Think of all the places you touch in a public restroom that have the potential to be contaminated with fecal matter and bacteria. The floor, the walls, the stall lock, the sink counter. Your hands touch all of these things. It’s nearly impossible to use a public restroom without contaminating your hands. You’re far more likely to get fecal matter on your hands than you are the actual toilet seat, despite what many believe. It’s very important that you wash your hands thoroughly and properly.
